Hello I spent the majority of today finishing off my book. Book review. Always spoiler free lol I mostly do these so I remember what they're about.
Neuromancer. This was one of the books that I was keen to read because a lot of people rated it really well and it was a pioneering book of its kind. William Gibson created a world in the future where people can hook up their conciousness into the Internet, known as the Matrix in this book(not related to the Matrix movie franchise) and it reminds me a lot of the anime called ghost in the shell. The society fits into the 'cyberpunk' genre which is defined by, I quote 'A science fiction subgenre involving a oppressive futuristic computerized society'
Chiba, Japan is where the streets have a dark kind of wayward feel to it. Your go to for all things shady. All types of sketchy deals and underground black markets. The other places travelled in the book show how the rich are indulgent, people can be cloned, cryogenically frozen, lifespans extended, bodies technologically enhanced and AIs exist. Also drugs (labelled derms in the book) are prevailent everywhere and is a reccurring theme because the main character is nearly always using.
What is amazing for this book is that William Gibson was the first to use the word 'cyberspace' relating it to the internet so in a way he coined the word for the meaning as we use it today. Gibson predicted how the internet would evolve into this matrix that he created. This book was published in 1984 and I googled lol the internet was created in 1974.
Protagonist is a hacker for hire (in the book this job is called being a cowboy) until he screws over the the wrong people in the already shady line of work and he ends up unable to hook up into the Matrix which is his life and he's like idgaf about everything and everyone doing derms in Chiba trying to find shady surgeon who can fix his disability. He is then blackmailed because he used to be and trained under the best of the best. Throughout the book we follow him doing derms through to be blackmailed and yeahh I also didn't catch much from the blurb on goodreads so I went into the book knowing nothing but that there was a matrix.
Despite it being really well recieved I didn't like it =/ maybe it was be because this protagonist is one of those what do you call it anti-protagonists? Antiheroes? Like you're not suppose to like them. He has no distinct features and typically really unrelatable. A lot of the characters were unrelatable to me, even the chick. The setting was good. I kept finding myself getting bored while Gibson was describing something. I kept having to read over and read and read over it. It didn't keep my mind preoccupied or maybe It was because my mind wanders a lot lol. Another thing about this book that made my mind wander was that there was a lot I didn't understand I barely grasped concepts like oh he's going to do that so that blah can etc.
I feel like I definitely missed out on something good here. I contemplated reading it through again just then just to give it one more shot but then I think I'll come back to it in the future to see how I'll like it then. I could have been expecting too much of it =\
My reviews are always bad that's why I don't dare post it on goodreads but happily go read some reviews if you thought this is your kind of thing.
Onto Chrysalids. Do you guys remember reading that? i did in year 9 for required reading. I didn't like it at first but then I thought it was awesome afterwards like wow cool. So this time I'm reading it again because I forgot some parts but I remember some of it and I loved it. I think I will buy it soon.
